Choosing the right pair of shoes to compliment your outfit can be a tricky task. While a pair of black high heels is always a classic choice, sometimes black just isn’t the right option for certain occasions. Black is always popular for the office, but for a timeless look that is just as professional, why not mix it up with some white high heels to add contrast to all black clothing? If you’re looking to add some extra visual interest to an outfit, especially a formal dress, try a complementary colour; like a black dress with red high heels, for some contrast. What's the secret to walking in high heels?

High heel shoes can be super daunting if you’re not used to stepping out in them regularly. Here are a few of our favourite tips and tricks for putting your best foot forward (and managing to stay in your heels for extended periods!

  • Keep your chin up! — While it might be tempting to look down at your feet as you walk in your brand new silver high heels, keeping your head down means you'll miss obvious obstacles in front of you, and hardly makes for a glamorous entrance. Not only that, but looking down can even unbalance you more than you might otherwise feel! Keep your head up and your eyes straight forward when walking, and focus on a still object several metres away from you to help steady yourself.
  • Start small before you reach great heights! — Let's face it, walking in heels can really be a workout. While purchasing well-made womens high heels will help you get used to them, you may need to train your muscles before you can manage a huge stiletto. If you're a beginner, opt for a shorter, wider heel and an ankle strap so you can train your feet.
  • Stretch it out! — And speaking of training, stretching out your ankles is a great idea if you're about to commit to a long stint in high heel shoes. Trust us, your feet will thank you later!
  • Stay well heeled (except on stairs) — When walking in heels, you want to plant the heel of your foot down first, and then allow your toe to follow. The only exception to this rule is on stairs, when you should put most of your weight on your toe for maximum stability.

What should I look for when buying high heels?

A well-made shoe will always help avoid discomfort, pain and the chance of slips or falls in heels. High quality materials like leather require care, but mould to the foot over time, and designer shoes have well designed footbeds which will support your feet. Your toes should sit comfortably in the front section of the shoe, known as the toe box. They should have room to wiggle and move forward slightly as you stand up, but not fall over the edge of the shoes' front, nor slip off your heel when you walk.
